Distinguish manual saves from checkpoints and account for difficulty and protagonist differences.
If the game returns you farther back than expected, stop before overwriting a slot. A checkpoint used after death and a manually selected save can represent different moments; the protagonist and difficulty also affect what you may have saved. Keep any existing local or platform cloud copy until you understand which one is newer. Do not delete save files to diagnose the issue.
Compare what actually loaded
- Note the difficulty, character, location and approximate time of your expected progress. At the title screen, inspect the available save entries and their displayed timestamps or descriptions; menu labels can differ by platform.
- If you used Continue or restarted after death, compare that result with an explicitly selected manual save. Check the character and location shown for each entry. Do not assume the latest automatic checkpoint is the last time you manually saved.
- In Standard (Classic) and Insanity, sources report that Grace needs an ink ribbon to save at her typewriter; Leon's sections have different save behavior. On Standard (Modern), reporting describes more frequent autosaves and no ink-ribbon requirement for Grace. Verify the selected difficulty and current in-game prompts rather than applying one rule to both characters.
- If you find the desired manual slot, load it deliberately and confirm the location and inventory before proceeding. If only an earlier entry exists, check whether a separate automatic save is shown; do not overwrite another slot while testing.
If local and cloud progress disagree
Do not guess which copy to replace. First record the timestamps and descriptions shown by your platform and preserve a backup using its official instructions if available. Cloud conflict prompts differ between PC, PlayStation and Xbox; read the exact direction of any overwrite and seek platform support if it is unclear. This guide has not independently tested the current sync menus on each platform.
If no entry contains the missing progress, note the platform, game version, difficulty, character, last confirmed save and any error text for Capcom support. A checkpoint that was never written may not be recoverable; repeated loading or deleting files cannot guarantee its return.
