Quick answer

Learn what to do from choosing a lane through your first team fight, without chasing every kill.

In your first match, don't worry about getting the most kills. Agree on a lane, deal with the minions in front of you, and retreat toward your turret when the map looks dangerous. The match is won by destroying the enemy base; chasing one low-health opponent into a trap can cost more than letting them escape.

This guide uses a typical three-lane match. Hero names, map markers and major-objective rules can vary by server and update, so check what your current game shows.

Leaving base: find your lane

Choose a hero whose skills you understand. Check whether someone is taking the jungle role and whether a teammate plans to roam. If the game marks gold, EXP and mid lanes, head to the one that fits your hero and team arrangement. Don't follow two teammates into the same lane just because they went that way.

For a first match, a marksman can start by focusing on the gold lane, a mage on mid, or a melee fighter on EXP lane. These are approachable starting points, not universal rules for every hero and composition. The jungler has their own jungle resources; don't casually take a monster a teammate is already fighting without knowing their plan.

Meet the wave: clear before deciding

Let your allied minions move forward and use basic attacks and skills on the opposing wave for gold and experience. Check your health and available skills before trading damage with the opposing hero. Once the wave is dealt with, glance at the minimap. If enemy positions are unknown, avoid walking alone into a bush or deep into their jungle.

Did your opponent retreat under their turret? Pause. Turrets attack targets in range, and attacking an enemy hero can draw turret fire. Diving without minion support, with low health, or without nearby teammates is particularly risky.

Read the map before an objective

Check the minimap after each wave. If an enemy disappears from their lane, an opponent appears near the river, or teammates signal retreat, move toward a safer allied position. An empty map is missing information, not proof that the route is safe.

Low health or skills on cooldown? Fall back near your turret and return to base for supplies if needed, then deal with the next wave. If teammates gather for a major river objective, first check the route, whether allies are close, and whether enemies arrived first. If minions are already pushing your turret, consider who can defend the lane instead of abandoning it automatically.

Your first team fight

Before joining, check where allies and enemies are. Marksmen and fragile mages usually stay behind teammates and hit an enemy they can reach safely. Melee heroes shouldn't chase alone into a group either. If teammates call retreat or several allies are already down, move toward safety instead of staying for one last hit.

After winning a fight, check health and the wave position, then choose with your team whether to push a turret or take a nearby objective. After losing, clear the incoming wave and defend closer to your turret. Kills create opportunities; advancing the wave and damaging structures turn those opportunities into progress toward victory.
