Quick answer

A teammate being chased does not automatically mean you should teleport. Check whether the destination is safe, whether arriving can change the fight, and what happens to the lane you leave. If you cannot answer those questions yet, watch the minimap and communicate rather than teleporting into a second death.

This is a decision guide for standard Dota 2 matches. Heroes, items and patches change the details; check the current item tooltip and map for teleport availability and valid destinations.

Four checks before you commit

  1. Landing: How far is the available destination from the fight? Are enemies already visible nearby? A teleport followed by a long walk may arrive too late.
  2. Numbers and condition: Can your teammate still escape or fight? Do you have health, mana and the abilities you need? Enemies missing from the map are not automatically far away.
  3. Lane and tower: Is a wave threatening your tower if you leave? Can another teammate defend it? An unanswered lane can cost a tower or a large wave.
  4. Cost: Check that your teleport is available and consider how you will return afterwards. You may not be able to teleport straight back if nothing happens.

Three situations

Teleport when your arrival can protect someone or a tower

An enemy is chasing a teammate who still has health and room to retreat. You have a safe landing spot and a control or healing ability that could change the outcome. Tell the teammate you are coming, select the safer destination, then decide whether to fight or cover the retreat. If far more enemies appear than expected, do not keep fighting just because you already teleported.

Push when the map gives you a window

Several opponents have shown on the far side of the map, and you have a friendly creep wave and nearby support. Consider pushing a tower, mark the objective and watch for opponents disappearing or returning to defend. Once their positions are unknown, back away before chasing the last few hits into an area without vision.

Farm when the fight cannot be helped

If the teammate has already died, enemies surround the landing point, or the fight will end before you arrive, do not teleport merely to be involved. Take a safe nearby wave or resources, watch where the opponents go next, and tell your team whether your teleport is available.

After the decision

After a successful defense, avoid chasing into darkness. Check the wave and your team’s health and mana before deciding whether to advance. If the response failed, identify the cause: late arrival, unsafe landing or an unseen opponent. Fix that decision next time instead of blaming every failure on teleport speed.
