The numbers describe roles and relative farm priority, not a ranking of player skill. As a starting point, position 1 usually receives the most room to collect gold; position 5 typically takes less farm and spends more effort helping the team. Actual lane assignments and responsibilities change with heroes, draft and the match.

For a first standard match, agree on the roles before picking. A common starting arrangement is 1 + 5 in the safe lane, 2 mid, and 3 + 4 in the offlane. Use it to understand the map, not as an unbreakable rule.
What each position is trying to accomplish
| Position | Common name | Early-game job | When the game opens up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carry | Last-hit safely and build toward useful items with support. | Choose safe farm, join fights when equipped or needed, and help take objectives. |
| 2 | Mid | Contest the middle lane's experience and gold. | Use levels and abilities to influence nearby fights or pressure a lane. |
| 3 | Offlaner | Gain levels and farm while pressuring the opposing safe lane. | Help the team start or withstand fights and contest map space. |
| 4 | Support | Assist the offlaner, contest opponents and respond to opportunities. | Coordinate rotations, vision and fights while finding safe farm when appropriate. |
| 5 | Hard support | Help the carry survive and last-hit; manage lane pressure and supplies. | Help with information, protection and team needs rather than competing for the carry's farm. |
These are tendencies. An offlaner is not always the team's toughest hero, and a support can take safe farm nobody else can reach. Hero abilities, team plan and patch influence the details.
Your first few minutes
If you are position 1: focus on last-hitting and avoiding unnecessary deaths. Tell the support when you are low on health or need help. If the lane is unsafe, discuss a safer place to farm rather than walking back into the same danger.
If you are position 5: watch your carry and the enemy heroes, use your abilities to make the lane safer, and bring appropriate recovery or vision resources when available. Do not stand so far away that you cannot help, or so far forward that the opponents can isolate you.
If you are position 2: pay attention to last hits and the opposing mid hero. Before leaving to help another lane, look at your own creep wave and communicate; a rotation can create pressure but also costs time and lane resources.
If you are position 3 or 4: coordinate with your lane partner. Position 3 usually needs levels and some farm; position 4 can help contest enemies and protect or create openings. If one of you leaves, tell the other so they can adjust their position.
Farm priority is a conversation, not a ban
When two teammates reach the same wave, the carry may have a more urgent item goal; communicate before taking it. Conversely, a support clearing an otherwise unattended safe wave is not automatically doing something wrong. Ask who can use the gold, who is safe to show, and what objective the team wants next.
For your next game, pick one role and a hero whose abilities you understand. At the end, review whether you helped that role's early job: safe farm for a carry, lane pressure for an offlaner, or useful protection and information for a support. Specific hero builds and map details should be checked against the current patch.
