Quick answer

Read the wave and missing enemies before deciding whether to defend, join teammates or return to base.

Start with the wave nearest your turret and the information on your minimap. If enemy minions threaten your structure and opponents are missing, clear from a safer position first. If your wave is advancing, you know enough about nearby threats and your team needs help, that creates a possible rotation window—not an instruction to run through an unseen jungle.

The three graphics below are conceptual diagrams, not screenshots or scale maps. Blue means your side, red the enemy; a square is your turret, small circles are minions, and large circles are heroes. A question mark means an enemy's current position is unknown.

1. Enemy wave approaching: clear safely

Diagram: an enemy wave approaches your turret while an enemy position is unknown

Your turret is threatened and one or more opponents are missing. Stay within a retreat route toward your turret, clear the minions as safely as your hero allows and signal the missing enemy. Do not walk past the wave into an unobserved bush just to finish faster. If you cannot clear without being caught, ask a nearby teammate for help and protect your life rather than losing both the wave and a kill.

Afterward: check the next wave and the enemy's position. If a teammate needs immediate help, weigh that urgency rather than treating wave clear as an unconditional rule.

2. Your wave is pushing: consider a rotation

Diagram: your wave moves forward while your hero has a possible route toward teammates

Once the opposing wave is cleared and yours advances, look at the minimap and your team's position. If the route is reasonably safe and your teammates can use your help, signal and move toward them. The wave's pressure may buy time, but it does not guarantee the enemy must stay or that the path is safe. If several opponents disappear or your teammate cannot follow, return toward cover rather than forcing the rotation.

3. Need to recall: create a window

Diagram: a hero returns behind a friendly turret while their wave moves away

If health or resources are low, clear the current wave when it is safe, then move behind your turret or another protected spot and recall. Check the next wave and teammate positions before leaving: can someone defend while you return? If enemies are closing in and you cannot safely finish the wave, retreat immediately rather than staying for a perfect setup.

After healing or buying, look at the map before choosing the route back. Return to the threatened lane if it needs you; otherwise rejoin the team where you can arrive safely.
