Quick answer

Start with a single manageable enemy and watch one attack from start to finish. Hold guard for a safer first observation, then try a timed guard near impact; use dodge to leave the attack path when blocking is risky. Do not assume every boss move can be blocked or parried.

Check your actual controls

The control guide updated in August 2026 lists L1 on PlayStation / LB on Xbox for block or parry. Its keyboard tables show settings that vary between presets and remapping; it also lists an optional mouse side button for Guard/Aim. Open your own input settings and confirm the displayed Guard/Aim and Evade bindings before practising.

For the guide's default evasion setting, the listed roll input is a single press and evade is a double press of the assigned button. Evasion Control and Reverse Roll and Dash Input can change that relationship. The official Known Issues notice last updated 21 September 2026 also listed a case where the default evasion key still works after rebinding when Evasion Control is set to Hold. Check the current notice and your actual input, not an old fixed key list.

Three short drills

  1. Observe: keep a safe distance, guard an ordinary strike and watch the enemy's wind-up and recovery. Stop attacking long enough to see the whole animation.
  2. Time the guard: on the same visible strike, press guard close to impact and look for the game's successful response. If you are too early, compare the result with ordinary blocking; adjust slightly on the next attempt rather than guessing a universal millisecond window.
  3. Dodge and punish: against a move that is difficult to block, evade out of its path, then use one short attack only when the enemy finishes. If a follow-up is coming, defend again instead of committing to a long combo.

Why the practice failed

What happened Check next time
You dodge the wrong way or action Confirm your Evade binding and Hold/double-press settings
You are hit after the first strike Watch for the enemy's second attack before countering
Your guard fails on a boss move Test a different response; the move's block or parry behavior may differ
You cannot react consistently Reduce variables: one enemy, one move, same input and enough room

This is a practice routine, not a verified list of every enemy's safe windows. Save before a difficult encounter and use the game's difficulty settings if you want more room to learn.
