Crimson Desert early gear upgrades: start at the Hernand blacksmith

Bring the weapon you actually use to the Hernand blacksmith, open Refinement and inspect the materials for its next level. Gather only what that screen requests, then upgrade one item and compare its stats. Do the same for armor you plan to keep; early material lists vary by equipment.

Inspect before collecting

1. Speak to the blacksmith and choose Refinement. Select your equipped weapon and read the next-level requirements and resulting stats before confirming.
2. Write down the exact missing material and quantity. Community guides identify Iron Ore and Copper Ore as common needs for metal weapons and plate armor; wood, hides or cloth can apply to other equipment. Your selected item's own screen is authoritative.
3. Look for the corresponding resource while exploring or check a merchant if available. Community guides describe mining ore deposits with a pickaxe; confirm that you have the tool and can interact with the deposit.
4. Return, check the requirement again and refine. If the upgrade asks for something unfamiliar, leave the screen and investigate it before spending a rare item.

Decide what to improve first

If fights take too long, consider your frequently used weapon first. If you are being defeated before learning an enemy's attacks, compare an armor upgrade with bringing more healing food. These are starting choices, not a promise that a fixed upgrade level is optimal for every build.

Some published guides disagree about costs and later refinement levels. Do not assume a universal silver fee, success chance or exact material list: read the current confirmation screen. Higher-level resources can have other uses, so keep a reserve until you understand what your equipment requests.

If the option or material is missing

Check that you are at the blacksmith and in Refinement, that the item is eligible, and that the required material is actually in your available inventory. If a named resource is absent, search the specific resource rather than selling unrelated materials.
