Choose your goal before moving buildings. For everyday resource gathering, place important storages where an attacker must work to reach them. For a regular Clan War, focus on making stars harder to earn: protect the Town Hall and prevent one easy entry from reaching every important defense. A war base is edited separately from your Home Village layout.
These principles are for Home Village Town Hall 1–10, not a copyable layout or a guarantee of defense. Available buildings change by level; use the defenses and walls actually unlocked in your village.
Start with the goal
| Situation | Protect first | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday resource-focused layout | Storages containing resources you care about | Can an attacker reach several storages from the same outside gap? |
| Regular war layout | Town Hall and defenses that stop the expected attack | Can one entry reach the core and remove multiple defenses easily? |
In Clan Wars, the base and defensive Clan Castle are separate from the home layout. Supercell notes that war attackers do not take the resources stored in your village, so a war layout does not need to protect those resources as its primary goal. Configure the war base during preparation; changes after battle day starts do not affect that war.
Arrange the core and the outside
Use this conceptual diagram, not a tile-by-tile blueprint. Each box is a role, not a precise building count or game screenshot:
Outside: ordinary buildings slow or redirect an attacker
┌──────── compartment ────────┐
│ defense │ protected goal │
│ │ Town Hall or │
│ │ key storage │
└─────────────────────────────┘
Other defenses cover approaches from different sides
- Put the objective you care about inside the protected area. For a resource layout, spread important storages so one breach does not reach all of them. For war, make the Town Hall part of a defended route rather than an exposed corner.
- Divide the interior into more than one compartment when your wall supply permits. A single large open compartment can give an attacker a straight path to several targets. Leave room for available buildings; this is not a fixed number of walls.
- Place defenses so they cover likely approaches and support each other. Check air and ground coverage using the ranges and buildings available at your Town Hall. A defense hidden in the core is not useful if the vulnerable approach remains uncovered.
- Place outer buildings with a purpose: they can take time to clear or influence a ground army's path. Test your own layout in the editor rather than assuming every attacker will follow one route.
Check the gaps before saving
Look for exposed storages or Town Hall, large unprotected spaces and defenses that cover only one another while leaving an approach open. Check traps and the war Clan Castle separately. In war preparation, request defensive reinforcements; these are not the same troops you request for attacking.
After a defense, watch the replay. If attackers repeatedly enter from the same side and reach the objective, move a defense or change a compartment, then compare the next result. A layout that works against one army can still struggle against another, so use replays to adjust instead of promising an unbeatable base.
