Quick answer

When builders are scarce, use a simple default: keep your main attack developing, then cover the most urgent storage or defense gap. Stagger finishing times so you can start the next job without all builders becoming free together. The Laboratory's research queue is a separate planning concern from the builders' building work.

Stagger finishing times so you can start the next job without all builders becoming free together. The Laboratory's research queue is a separate planning concern from the builders' building work.

This is a Home Village plan for roughly Town Hall 1–10. Available buildings, costs and durations vary; check your village's current screens. You do not need a fixed number of builders to use it.

Pick the next two jobs

Look at the army you use most. If an available Army Camp upgrade would increase usable capacity, or another available offensive building is required for your plan, that is a reasonable early builder job. An upgrade to the Laboratory building can unlock later research levels; check the exact prerequisite before scheduling it.

Next, look for a resource bottleneck. If the displayed cost of an important upgrade exceeds the capacity of a relevant storage, plan that storage upgrade before saving for the job. If storage is sufficient, identify a defense that leaves a common approach exposed. A war-focused player can move an important war-defense job forward; a player mainly farming can prioritize a functioning attack and storage first.

There is no universal rule to finish every defense before starting offense, or to ignore defense entirely. The question is which completed job removes the next practical obstacle for your village.

Stagger the queue

Suppose you have two available builders and enough resources for two jobs. Start an offensive job with one and a storage or defense job with the other. If their displayed completion times are similar, consider choosing a shorter second job or starting it later so one builder is available sooner. With more builders, use the same idea rather than starting every longest project simultaneously.

Before assigning the last free builder, look at the next job you want to start and its resource cost. If you expect to collect the resource soon, leaving a builder available can be useful; if no near-term job needs one, an idle builder has an opportunity cost. Choose based on your play schedule, not a rule that one worker must always stay free.

Fit in Laboratory research

Select research for a troop or spell you actually use and compare its cost with the building jobs. If both require the same resource, reserve enough for the next priority. Supercell's December 2022 notes say research can be started while the Laboratory building is upgrading; check the current screen for the specific level's prerequisites.

Before a planned war, check which upgrades might affect your intended lineup and timing in your current game. If the work would interfere with an attack you have agreed to make, schedule it after that attack or coordinate an alternative with your clan.

When a job finishes

Collect the result, check the army or storage again, and start the next planned work if you have the displayed resources. If attacks still fail despite stronger buildings, review target choice and troop placement before assuming that another upgrade is the only solution.
