For a newer Home Village player, a good default is to upgrade when your main attack is working, essential research is underway or finished, and you have a plan for your builders and resources. You do not have to max every wall first. Equally, upgrading repeatedly while ignoring your army can leave you with new buildings but an attack that struggles to fund them.
This planning guide is for approximately Town Hall 1–10. Availability, costs and timers can change; check your own village before committing.
Check your army first
- Pick the troops and spells you actually use for farming or war. Check the Laboratory and prioritize research for those units over ones you never deploy.
- Look at Army Camps and other offensive buildings available at your current Town Hall. If capacity or a required building is lagging, schedule it before or alongside the Town Hall upgrade.
- Attack with that army. If you consistently cannot reach the storages or defenses you intended to target, improving the army or changing targets may help more immediately than unlocking another Town Hall level.
Consider defense as well. A war-focused clan may prefer a balanced village and coordinated timing. A player focused on unlocking content may accept catching up on defenses later; that is a trade-off, not a universal rule.
Plan resources and builders
Before upgrading, check the displayed cost and time, and reserve the required resource. Then look at your first priority after it finishes: a new offensive building, Army Camp or research may need resources soon. Do not spend everything if doing so prevents you from starting that work.
Stagger long builder jobs rather than finishing them all together. If a builder is repeatedly idle or storage stays full because the upgrades you care about are finished, moving up can make sense even with unfinished walls or defenses. If you need a builder immediately afterward, schedule a job to finish around the same time; the upgrade does not automatically free one.
Upgrade now or wait?
- Consider upgrading: your usual army is usable, you can pay the displayed cost and you know what to build or research next.
- Wait briefly: your main army lacks an important upgrade, you cannot afford the Town Hall, or a war commitment makes the timing inconvenient. Start the missing work and reassess when it finishes.
- Already rushed? Pause further Town Hall upgrades. Improve the troops, spells and army capacity you actually use toward what your current base allows, then assign builders to the most useful remaining work.
Use the Town Hall progression preview to inspect upcoming unlocks, and check the actual upgrade screen for current conditions and costs. A level number alone does not tell you whether you are ready.
