Quick answer

For a newer Home Village, a useful default is to save gems for an additional permanent Builder Hut if one is available, rather than repeatedly spending them to finish short timers. Use a magic item when it meaningfully advances work you were already planning, and check the in-game description before confirming.

This guide focuses on roughly Town Hall 1–10. Availability, prices, capacities and item effects can change. Check the game screen for your village; no purchase is required for the planning advice below.

Decide what the gems are for

Open the shop and check whether another Builder Hut is available and how many gems it requires. If gaining another permanent builder is your next goal, keep that amount in mind before paying to finish a short upgrade. An extra builder can work on future construction repeatedly; a one-time finish only completes the job you choose.

That does not make every immediate finish wrong. You might choose one to finish a specific project before a planned play session. Compare the displayed gem price against your builder goal and decide whether the saved time matters to you. Do not assume the same price or availability at every stage.

Match the item to the job

Supercell describes several different kinds of magic item:

Item What to look for When it may help
Book of Building Completes an eligible building construction or upgrade A building job you want finished now.
Builder Potion Temporarily accelerates eligible builders Several builders have work running during the effect.
Research Potion Temporarily accelerates Laboratory research A research project is actually underway.
Rune Fills the relevant resource storages You have a specific purchase planned and room to use the resources.

The game tells you the current target, effect, duration and any limitations. A potion is not automatically better than a book: check the jobs running, their remaining time and your next objective. A book used on a short job saves less waiting than the same book on a longer eligible job, but the best use can still depend on what you need immediately.

Before using or claiming one

  1. Check the item description and the intended building, research or storage. Home Village and Builder Base items do not necessarily target the same place.
  2. If using a potion, confirm the relevant work is running and consider whether it will remain active during the boost.
  3. For a rune, check storage and the next upgrade's displayed cost. Plan how to spend the resources; filling storage without a use in mind may leave you unable to collect more of that resource until you spend some.
  4. Check the item's current storage capacity and the claim screen. If the game gives you a choice when full, read its result before confirming; do not assume extra items will be stored automatically.

Keep a book or potion for a useful bottleneck, but do not wait forever for an imagined perfect moment. When the next step is clear, using an eligible item to start it sooner can be worthwhile.
