Quick answer

If you can safely push your minions into the enemy turret, that often gives you a better recall window: the turret clears your wave while you shop. But if staying means you are likely to die, recall safely now and accept some lost minions. A crash reduces risk; it does not guarantee you lose nothing.

Three lane situations

Situation Decision What you risk
Your wave is close to the enemy turret and you have health, mana and vision Clear enemy minions quickly, confirm your wave reaches turret range, then recall from a safe spot. If the opponent stops the wave outside turret range, they may hold it and deny your return.
Enemy wave is moving toward your turret and you can safely collect it Last-hit near your side, then reassess whether you can push the next wave. Recalling immediately may leave the turret or enemy minions to kill gold and experience you could have collected.
You are low, outnumbered or the enemy jungler is missing Retreat and recall even if the wave is imperfect. You may lose farm, but staying for a perfect crash can cost a death.

Before leaving lane

  1. Look at the minimap and the next wave. Can the opponent interrupt your recall or freeze the wave before it reaches their turret?
  2. Decide whether to spend abilities to push quickly. Don't spend your last escape or mana if it lets the opponent catch you.
  3. After the wave actually reaches the turret, step out of enemy vision and recall. Buy promptly and return; monitor the wave while travelling.
  4. If a nearby team fight or objective needs help, compare the travel time and your health with the farm you may lose. A roam is useful only if you can arrive in time and your team can act.

Try these cases in practice or a normal match. Review what happened to the wave on your return, rather than assuming every push creates a free recall.
