Start with top lane if you want time to learn one champion and fight one opponent. Prefer helping someone else? Try support. Jungle gives you freedom to move, but asks you to watch several lanes, so it can wait until you know the map.

This guide covers PC League of Legends on Summoner’s Rift, not Wild Rift. Team compositions vary; these are usual jobs, not restrictions on champion choice.
Pick by what you enjoy
| Position | Main job | First thing to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Hold a solo lane and collect minions. | Last-hit without losing too much health. |
| Jungle | Fight monsters, visit lanes and help contest objectives. | Clear safely, then check whether your teammate can follow. |
| Mid | Farm the central lane and respond to nearby fights. | Watch both sides of the lane before moving. |
| Bot carry | Share bottom lane with support and collect most of its minion gold. | Keep distance while landing last hits. |
| Support | Help the team through protection, pressure and vision. | Stay close and use support-item charges. |
Schematic, not to scale. 1 top; 2 mid; 3 bottom, shared by carry and support; 4 marks one jungle area. The jungle occupies areas between lanes.
Your first few matches
- Pick one position and a champion whose abilities make sense to you. Read the ability descriptions before the match; you do not need to memorise a complete build.
- On top, mid or bot carry, watch a minion’s health and land the killing hit to earn its gold. When the opponent threatens you, give up one minion rather than walk into a bad fight.
- As support, watch your partner’s position before engaging. If they are too far away to follow, back off and regroup.
With a World Atlas charge and an allied champion nearby, you can last-hit a minion and share its kill gold with the ally. Use the item’s displayed rules; avoid taking unshared last hits from the carry. (source) 4. As jungler, start with the recommended jungle setup, fight monsters and check the map between camps. Approach a lane when your teammate can help; if the opponent has escaped to their tower, return to farming instead of chasing.
After a match, ask one concrete question: did you miss minions because you attacked too early, or because you stood where the opponent could hit you? Work on that next game before changing roles.
