Quick answer

Compare player limits, consoles, activities and progress for normal multiplayer, GameShare and Cloud Islands.

If everyone owns the game, up to four players can connect locally or online using their own Switch 2 systems. If only the host owns it, GameShare invites one friend into a specified area. First decide whether you want to visit towns, build together or share the game.

The comparison follows current official Nintendo guidance. Menu names, features and membership rules can vary by region; we haven't independently playtested connection or save behavior.

Method Players and devices Where and what
Normal local / online Each has a Switch 2 and game copy; up to four Visit towns; in Palette Town the host can turn off Spectator Mode to build together
Local GameShare Host: Switch 2 plus game; guest: Switch or Switch 2; two total Play together in Palette Town during the session
Online GameShare Host owns the game; both need Switch 2 and GameChat; two total Play in Palette Town through GameChat
Cloud Island Online mode with separate game copies; up to four Visit using an address and build according to settings; items stay separate from your town bag

Online features require internet, a Nintendo Account and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; GameChat has additional applicable requirements. A GameShare guest can play shared content only during the session; ending it doesn't grant ownership.

Advance the opening requests until you can use the PC at a Pokémon Center. Nintendo Support says access to Link Play takes some early progress and Environment Level 2; the time and unlocks for other multiplayer features can differ. Select Link Play at the PC and read the first-use notices.

Both own the game: invite or visit

  1. The host goes to the town to share and uses the Pokémon Center PC: Link Play → Invite Others to Visit, then local or online connection.
  2. Set the player count as prompted. Online generates a Link Code; local play offers a choice about using one.
  3. On their own game's PC, the friend selects Link Play → Visit a Friend and the same connection method. Enter the host's code online, or find the town in the local list.
  4. When finished, use the PC's connection menu to close the session or return home.

Visitors to ordinary towns use Spectator Mode and can't freely change terrain. In Palette Town, the host can turn Spectator Mode off at the PC so everyone can build. Nintendo also says challenge progress and rewards from visiting another town go to the host, and visitors can't take local items back to their own towns.

Friend doesn't own it: GameShare

First progress until you can reach Palette Town. Nintendo Support says the first visit requires creating a habitat to attract Hitmonchan and completing its request to learn Rock Smash; follow the game prompts to reach the area.

Local: At the Palette Town PC, the host chooses Link Play → Invite Others to Visit → GameShare → With nearby players. The friend uses GameShare on the HOME Menu of a Switch or Switch 2 to join a local user and session; the host starts it after they join.

Online: Both use Switch 2 and GameChat. At the same PC, the host selects GameShare Via GameChat and invites the friend. The guest joins from the GameChat invitation and waits for the host to start. Check Nintendo's current regional account and membership conditions.

Want a shared online island?

A Cloud Island can be visited by people with its address and any required Link Code even when its creator is away. It has separate island progress and item handling. Nintendo says items in a town bag can't be carried to or from a Cloud Island; on leaving, items currently in the bag are stored at that island's PC. This doesn't mean everyone's single-player saves automatically merge.
