Read the route, enemy and available supplies before committing to a fight; use a distraction only when it creates a way through.
With Grace, first look for a safe way through. Avoid a fight when the required path opens without spending scarce supplies; fight when an enemy blocks necessary progress and you have no safer route. If an unfamiliar threat keeps pursuing you, look for an escape route instead of assuming you must defeat it immediately.
This spoiler-light guide covers the base game on PC and PS5. Equipment and encounter behaviour depend on progress and difficulty; use the actions and prompts currently available in your game.
Read the situation before moving
From a safer spot, locate the door or objective you need, the enemy's position and a possible retreat. Watch for a moment: if the enemy moves away from the route, that may be your chance to pass. Check whether the destination is actually open before committing. A useful detour is one that gets you closer to the goal without trapping you in a dead end.
If you have an empty bottle and a suitable opportunity, throwing it away from your intended path can distract some enemies. Watch the result before moving: enemies do not all respond identically, and a distraction does not guarantee the route stays clear. Save the item if using it would pull danger toward your only exit.
Decide whether to fight
| Situation | First response |
|---|---|
| The enemy moves off the required path | Wait, then pass while you have room. |
| An available distraction can draw it away from your route | Use it away from your escape path and confirm the enemy's response. |
| A necessary route is blocked and passing is unsafe | Use available combat tools to create space, then reassess the route. |
| A pursuer is overwhelming you | Find an open path or exit; don't assume sustained fire is the only solution. |
Before spending ammunition or healing, look at what remains and whether you can reach the next objective. A clear corridor may be useful if you must return, but do not spend every resource trying to clear an optional room.
If you have to engage
Keep space to retreat and avoid drawing additional enemies if possible. If an enemy becomes staggered and the game offers Grace a melee push, use the on-screen prompt to create space when it is safe to approach; the opportunity is situational, not a guarantee against every opponent. Move through the opening or retreat and reassess instead of standing still until the next hit.
Grace's crafting options change with progress. After obtaining the blood collector, the official manual lists a handgun-ammo example using scrap and infected blood samples. Check your current crafting list and ingredients; do not plan around an item or device you have not acquired.
After getting away
Once safe, check health, ammunition and the route back before proceeding. If the way is still blocked, return to observation: did the enemy move, is there another door, or is a fight now unavoidable? That short check prevents spending supplies on the wrong problem.
