Build a small Java redstone circuit and check the signal one section at a time.
Build a visible signal path: a lever powers three redstone dust pieces, which point into a solid block next to an iron door. Switch on to open, switch off to close. This is a Java Edition demonstration, not a tested cross-edition blueprint. It has one lever and no automatic closing.
Gather and place
You need a lever, three redstone dust, an iron door, one full stone block and a solid supporting floor. Use stone or cobblestone rather than glass or slabs. Leave space to walk and keep an independent exit while testing.
Use the coordinates below as relative positions. Place a continuous six-block floor at Y=0, X=0 through 5. At Y=1 put the lever at X=0, dust at X=1–3, the solid block at X=4, and the lower half of the iron door at X=5. The door's upper half occupies X=5, Y=2; keep that space empty before placing it.
X 0 1 2 3 4 5
Y=2 . . . . . D
Y=1 L R R R B D
Y=0 # # # # # #
L = lever; R = redstone dust; B = full stone block; D = iron door; # = floor; . = empty. This is a side view, not a game screenshot. The final dust must point into the block directly adjacent to the door.
An iron door opens via redstone power; using the door directly will not toggle it. Keep the lever accessible from your testing side, because this demonstration has no second switch.
Test each section
Turn the lever on: all three dust pieces should light and the door should open. Turn it off: the dust should darken and the door close. If the first piece stays dark, check lever position and the supporting floor. If only the last part is dark, check the three pieces are connected on the same level. If the wire lights but the door stays shut, check its connection into the full block and the block's adjacency to the door. If the door stays open, check for another nearby power source.
No repeater is needed for this short demonstration. A second control or automatic closing requires a separate design.
The arrangement was checked against community documentation on lever, redstone power and iron doors, but has not been built and switched in a specific Java version. Test in a disposable world before relying on it; Bedrock behavior needs separate testing.
