Compare cross-platform play, Java mods and world compatibility before buying or starting a shared world.
Want to play with friends on phones or consoles? Start with Bedrock. Want Java mods or a Java server on a computer? Choose Java Edition. A Windows player may have either edition, so “my friend plays on PC” is not enough to establish compatibility.
This comparison concerns international Minecraft Java and Bedrock, not the China edition, Education, Dungeons or Legends. Check the current store and platform requirements for purchase entitlements and console online subscriptions.
Ask these questions before choosing
- Ask your friend which edition they actually launch: Java Edition or Minecraft/Bedrock. A screenshot and complete version number are more useful than “the latest one.”
- Check whether you want to join a friend's world, a Realm or a particular server, and which edition and game version it requires.
- For a modpack, obtain its supported game version, loader and loader version. A Java mod's
.jarcannot simply be installed as a Bedrock add-on.
| Your main goal | Start with | Confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| Play with a phone and a Windows friend | Bedrock | Game versions, Microsoft accounts and multiplayer permissions. |
| Play online with console friends | Bedrock | Platform support and any required online subscription. |
| Play Java mods on Windows, macOS or Linux | Java | The modpack's game version and loader. |
| Continue a friend's existing world | That world's original edition | Save format and server type. |
On a Windows PC, open Minecraft Launcher and sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the game. Select Java Edition or Bedrock Edition on the left; Play or Install indicates access, while Buy Now indicates that the launcher does not detect ownership for that account. Confirm which edition you actually launch before inviting a friend.
Can Java and Bedrock join each other?
Not through ordinary native multiplayer. The same game name, seed or similar-looking version numbers don't make a Java client and a Bedrock friend world directly compatible. Third-party cross-edition server solutions exist, but they have extra compatibility and maintenance requirements; don't assume a normal friend world includes them.
The easiest route is to agree on an edition first and then match the specific version required by the world or server. Check this before investing in a long-term world.
What happens to worlds and mods?
For a move within the same edition, keep a complete backup and use an export or transfer method supported by the platform. Java and Bedrock world formats differ; renaming a folder does not turn one into the other. Conversion tools can change blocks, entities, redstone or item data, so preserve an untouched copy before trying one.
Java modpacks may require loaders such as Fabric or Forge, while Bedrock add-ons use a different format. Both editions can use resource packs, but a resource pack is not a replacement for a gameplay mod. Check the creator's supported version and dependencies before downloading.
Confirm your choice with a small test
Create a temporary world or join the intended server together before starting a long project. If mods are the reason for your choice, load the intended modpack in a separate instance first. If playing together is the priority, have both friends join once: that test reveals a mismatch sooner than comparing screenshots.
