Bring an iron pickaxe and water, choose a deep mining level, and check for lava before breaking diamond ore.
For a first diamond trip, bring an iron pickaxe, water, food and torches; dig a deep route you can walk back through. Diamond ore needs an iron pickaxe or a higher suitable tier. A gold pickaxe may mine quickly but does not meet that requirement.
This route applies to international Java and Bedrock terrain generated in 1.18 or later. Older chunks, mods and custom worlds may differ. The suggested route is conservative, not a measured fastest method.
What depth should you try?
In modern terrain, diamond distribution generally becomes more favourable toward the bottom of the world, but bedrock, slower deep-slate mining and lava affect practical results. Y around −58 to −59 is a common starting reference for a deep tunnel, not a guaranteed diamond coordinate. The Y value here means the player's feet coordinate, not necessarily the block making up the tunnel floor.
If deep lava is unfamiliar, start somewhat higher and make a route you can control before going lower. You may give up some yield for an easier retreat; there is no claim that one level is fastest for every version and route.
Pack before you go
- An iron pickaxe with enough durability, plus a spare digging tool.
- A water bucket, food, torches and ordinary blocks to seal openings.
- Basic armour and a weapon for hostile mobs; leave valuables you do not need at base.
- The coordinates of your base and mine entrance, plus free inventory space for the diamonds.
Java on a computer normally displays coordinates with F3. In Bedrock, coordinates can be enabled in world settings; server permissions may differ.
If you still need an iron pickaxe, use a crafting table: place three iron ingots across the top row and two sticks down the center of the rows beneath. Smelt raw iron first if you only have raw iron.
Dig a route you can leave
- From a marked entrance, dig a staircase down so you can walk back. Don't dig straight beneath your feet or repeatedly straight over your head.
- At your chosen depth, make a main tunnel one block wide and two blocks high, then open short side tunnels. Mark turns; return to the main route to regroup before a branch becomes difficult to retrace.
- If a cave or lava opens up, stop. Block or separate the danger and make sure there is solid ground before proceeding. Don't jump over lava just to reach visible ore.
- When you find diamond ore, inspect the surrounding ordinary blocks, including beneath it, before using the iron pickaxe. Water in the Overworld can help deal with exposed lava, but it does not make unseen spaces automatically safe.
- Once you have a useful batch, follow the marked route home and store it. Diamonds safely returned matter more than the distance of one trip.
No Fortune yet?
The correct unenchanted pickaxe still obtains diamonds. Fortune can increase average drops but does not guarantee a fixed multiplier on every ore; Silk Touch gives the ore block, which can be carried home for later processing. You don't need to wait for perfect enchantments before pursuing your first diamond pickaxe.
If you encounter a sculk area associated with the Warden, withdraw and reconsider your route. An ancient city is not a required step for this mining plan.
No diamonds found?
Check the game version and when the chunk was generated, then confirm your actual depth. A short unsuccessful trip does not prove the chosen Y level is wrong. Extend into unexplored ground rather than repeatedly digging the same emptied area. On servers with modified ore generation, follow the server's rules.
