Quick answer

Narrow down version, account, host and network causes without deleting your world.

“Unable to connect to world” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start by recording both platforms, exact game versions and the full error. This guide targets a normal Bedrock friend-hosted world, not Java servers, Education Edition or Realms. Don't uninstall the game as a first step.

Check both versions and the invitation

Both players should use compatible Bedrock releases. Compare the actual version numbers rather than just saying “latest”; Preview/Beta and normal release are separate environments. Confirm you're using a friend invitation, not troubleshooting a server or Realm by mistake.

Check accounts and the host

Both players should sign into their intended Microsoft accounts and verify the invite reaches the correct account. Child or family-managed accounts may require a family organizer to enable multiplayer and cross-network permissions.

The host should check multiplayer and visibility/invite settings in the world's edit screen, then reopen the world. A normal hosted world generally requires the host online and the world running; a Realm behaves differently. Console online play may require the platform's current subscription; don't assume everyone needs to buy Realms.

To retry an invitation, the host opens the world, opens the in-game menu and selects Invite to Game, chooses the friend by gamertag, then sends the invitation. If the friend is absent from the list, use Add Friend with their actual gamertag. Menu wording and social features can change by version.

Isolate the cause

  1. Have the same host create a new ordinary test world and invite the friend. If it works, inspect the original world's settings and add-ons.
  2. Try switching host. A changed result helps narrow the affected side, but does not prove an internet provider has blocked the connection.
  3. Check official service status. If services are down, local changes may not help.
  4. If available and permitted, briefly try another network; consider mobile data charges. Change one condition at a time and record the result.

Restart the game and resend the invitation. If needed, restart the router and check the system's app-specific network permissions. Compare custom DNS, proxies or port settings with official guidance; don't disable the entire firewall or expose the device publicly as a first fix.

Still failing? Contact support with both platforms, versions, account permission checks, exact error, time and test results. We used a locally saved official support snapshot and Minecraft's friend-play page; we haven't tested a real two-device session.
