Quick answer

Start with a player who already has a regular place in your lineup and whose role you understand. Use match experience or Level Training Programs to level them, then allocate Progression Points. If you are unsure, try the recommended allocation first and test the player in a match before spending scarce training items on the rest of the squad.

This guide covers Dream Team. Some player types have different development availability; use the options shown for the individual player.

Training and progression are different

Step What it does Where to look
Level Training Uses training programs to give a player experience. Playing matches can also earn experience. My Team → Players, then select the player.
Player Progression Spends points earned by levelling to improve stats. Open that player’s progression screen.
Skill or position training Adds skills or changes eligible position proficiency, subject to the player and program. Check the player’s options and the program description before using it.

Training programs and progression points are not interchangeable. First check whether the player can still gain levels, then decide whether to use a program; the progression screen tells you how many points are available.

Konami says Auto Development reallocates all Progression Points automatically whenever the player levels up. If you want a manual allocation to remain under your control, check whether Auto Development is enabled and disable it before assigning points. (source)

A practical first investment

  1. Pick one starter you intend to keep in the team for several matches. Check their usual position and what you need them to do: defend, pass, finish or carry the ball.
  2. Play with them and check their experience. If you have training programs and want the upgrade now, open My Team → Players, select them and use Level Training. Read the confirmation screen before consuming an item.
  3. Open Player Progression. If available, try the game’s recommended allocation. It is a convenient baseline, not proof that the highest overall rating is best for every role.
  4. Play a match. If a defender repeatedly loses duels, or a passer cannot deliver the ball where you need it, use that observation to reconsider the allocation rather than copying a fixed build blindly.

Konami’s v4.0.0 update states that resetting Player Progression no longer requires GP. The older Dream Team page may still mention a GP cost, so check the current game confirmation before resetting and distinguish a point reset from consuming training items. Do not assume skill training, position training or other item costs are refunded by a progression reset.

When your first player feels useful, repeat the process for the next obvious weakness in your lineup. Holding some training programs gives you room to develop a new player later; no particular card is required to begin.
