When you lose the ball, first place a defender between the carrier and your goal. Use Match-up to contain and block the route, then press when the opponent takes a loose touch or has limited options. Holding pressure and dragging a centre-back out every time can open a gap.

A repeatable three-step drill
- Play an AI match at a manageable difficulty. When possession changes, switch to a nearby midfielder or defender and run back between ball and goal.
- Slow down and use Match-up while moving across the passing or shooting lane. Watch the attacker rather than committing to a tackle immediately; Konami describes Match-up as useful for blocking passes and shots.
- When the attacker touches the ball away or turns into a confined area, use Pressure briefly. If the first defender is beaten, switch to the covering player and recover the line instead of chasing from behind indefinitely.
Two mistakes to recognise
| Situation | Safer adjustment |
|---|---|
| You pull a centre-back toward the sideline and leave the middle open | Use a closer midfielder or full-back when possible; keep the centre-back covering the route to goal. |
| You press continuously and get passed around | Release pressure, reposition with Match-up and press again only when a teammate or touch creates an opening. |
To change mobile defending type, Konami’s published path is Extras → Game Settings → Play Settings → Defending Control Type. If the current menus differ, use the in-game help and confirm the chosen type before practising. (source)
Mobile and console controls
On mobile, open Extras > Help > Command List > Defence and select your actual touch control type; Classic Standard and Pressure Style differ, and menu labels can change. On console or PC, use your platform's current Command List to check cursor change, Match-up and Pressure. Konami's mobile controller manual gives a separate diagram, and mobile controller mappings can differ from console/PC. Practise the actions first rather than assuming one button layout works everywhere.
Konami adjusted Match-up and pressure behaviour in v5.4.0, so treat movement as something to test in the current version, not a fixed animation. Review one goal conceded: was the defender out of position, or did you press before cover arrived?
