FC 27 beginner formation: learn a 4-4-2 before changing everything

Try 4-4-2 for your first few matches: four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards give you recognizable passing and defensive lines. EA identifies it as a straightforward starting formation for Ultimate Team. It is a learning choice, not a promise that it is the strongest setup in the current patch.

Set up the team

In Ultimate Team, open Squad and Tactics and choose a 4-4-2 available to you. Place players in positions they can play and check the roles shown in your own game. Keep the initial tactics simple for several games; personnel, roles and mode settings can change how the shape behaves.

The diagram shows starting positions, not a fixed in-match shape. When one midfielder moves forward, use the other as a passing option behind the ball; when defending, try to keep a midfield line between the opponent and your centre-backs. The wide midfielders offer outlets, but emptying both flanks can leave space on a turnover.

Make a simple move

1. Win or receive the ball and look for a short pass to a central midfielder rather than forcing it directly to a striker.
2. If the middle is crowded, switch to a wide midfielder; use the nearby fullback as support if safe.
3. Look for one forward checking toward the ball and the other offering a forward option. If neither is open, pass back and change sides instead of forcing a through ball.
4. On losing possession, select a nearby midfielder and protect the middle before pulling a centre-back out.

Change only what your matches reveal

If the centre is repeatedly outnumbered, try a formation with an extra central midfielder and compare a few matches. If you cannot reach the wide players, inspect their positions and your passing decisions before changing width. Tactics options and exact role behavior should be checked in your game; there is no single width number that fits every player.
