When the opponent approaches, first move a defender between the ball and the dangerous space. Close the angle, stay balanced, and tackle when the ball is within reach—not every time an attacker gets near you. Practise this in an offline match before trying it under online pressure.

Set a baseline you understand
Open your controller settings and check your own player-switch, jockey and tackle inputs; layouts and remapping can change buttons. EA lists Advanced Defending as the FC 27 default, where different inputs choose tackle types. Tactical Defending selects the tackle type contextually. Jockey assistance can be Assisted or Manual; Assisted adjusts speed to help stay near an opponent.
Keep one setup while practising. Competitive preset rules may restrict options, so check the actual mode instead of assuming every offline setting carries over.
Choose the defender, then protect the middle
- When the opponent receives the ball, select a nearby midfielder or defender. Look at the player indicator before moving; switching twice in panic can pull a second player out of place.
- Move between the ball and the central pass or shooting lane. Use your configured jockey input to track the carrier as they turn; do not hold sprint into them continuously.
- If the attacker pushes the ball away or turns into your reach, try a standing tackle using your configured input. If they retain close control, keep containing and let teammates recover.
- When a pass is played, switch to the defender who can contest the receiver, then re-establish position. Avoid dragging a centre-back far away if a nearer midfielder can cover.
A five-minute drill
Start an offline match at a manageable difficulty. For the first few attacks, do not tackle immediately: track the ball carrier and count how often they enter the centre. Then add a tackle only when the ball is exposed. On the next attempt, watch whether the opponent passes through the gap left by your selected player.
EA's FC 27 settings include switching options such as Classic, Goal Side and Closest to Ball for next-player selection. If switching repeatedly selects an unexpected player, compare one option at a time and note your original setting. No setting replaces watching the indicator and protecting the space behind you.
