Dota 2 positions 1–5 explained: what should you do in lane?
The numbers describe roles and relative farm priority, not a ranking of player skill. As a starting point, position 1 usually receives the most room to collect gold; position 5 typically takes less farm and spends more effort helping the team. Actual lane assignments and responsibilities change with heroes, draft and the match.

Start by learning when your attack actually lands, then add lane pressure and enemy heroes. A fixed gold target at one minute is a poor universal test: heroes, matchups and lane roles differ. Compare your own attempts under similar conditions instead.
