Quick answer

Start with Deathmatch to practise aiming and moving without waiting for a round to end, then try Casual to learn the bomb sites with teammates. Move to Competitive when you can follow the objective and want a more structured match. Premier is a separate option with account requirements.

Valve's current guidance says the free version can access matchmaking and game modes except Premier. Prime Status is purchased separately; Steam says it enables XP, skill groups and Premier eligibility, with Premier additionally requiring profile level 10. You do not have to buy it merely to practise the basics.

The bomb round in plain language

On a defusal map, the attacking T side tries to plant the bomb at an eligible site and prevent a defuse. The defending CT side tries to prevent the plant or defuse the bomb if it is planted. Eliminating opponents can decide a round, but after a plant, attackers must still protect the bomb and defenders must deal with it in time.

At the start, check which side you are on and whether a teammate carries the bomb. Follow one teammate, learn a route to a site, and call out where you saw an opponent. After a plant, look at the bomb location before running off in search of kills. On CT, coordinate a retake; a defuse kit, when available in the mode, helps shorten the defuse.

A short learning path

Play a few Deathmatch minutes with the weapons you can actually control, then choose one defusal map in Casual. Learn the spawn, both sites and one route between them. When you enter Competitive, check teammates' money before buying and avoid leaving mid-match. Current mode availability and map pools may change; read the in-game Play menu.

Rush is not a bomb-site tutorial: Valve describes its current version as queued 3v3 arena rounds with a tower-control objective. Try it for fast fights, but use a defusal mode to practise planting and retaking.
