Put the team together

If Barbara is not yet in your account, use an available healer or shield and treat Freeze as optional until you have Hydro. KQM describes how the early characters are obtained, but your current quest and reward screen is the reliable check for your account.
If you own Barbara, activate her Elemental Skill and hit enemies with her Normal or Charged Attacks while it is active to heal the party; her Elemental Burst heals the party immediately. Watch for Cryo while her skill applies Hydro to your active character. (source)
Try a short rotation
- Against an ordinary enemy that can be Frozen, apply Hydro with Barbara, then Cryo with Kaeya. Watch for the Freeze reaction.
- Use the Traveler or fourth character when their ability adds something useful. Avoid adding Pyro immediately if your purpose is to observe the frozen target: it can change the reaction.
- If health drops, use your available healing and step away. Barbara's skill can apply Hydro to your active character; be cautious against Cryo attacks that may freeze you.
- When the enemy cannot be Frozen, stop relying on the control effect and use dodging, healing and your characters' damage instead. Some enemies and bosses behave differently.
Upgrade the weapon and key talent of the character you use most before spreading resources thin. Replace any slot as your roster grows; the goal is a team you can operate, not a fixed free-character list.
