To summon spirit ashes, you need the Spirit Calling Bell, an ash, enough of its required resource and a place where summoning is allowed. The bell is a key item: equip and use the ash, not the bell itself. If you missed the first meeting at Church of Elleh, there is another route through Roundtable Hold.

This guide covers normal exploration and boss fights in Elden Ring, not Nightreign. Special PvP modes can have different rules.
If Renna does not appear, try using Torrent, resting until night and fast-travelling to the Church of Elleh grace. If the encounter has been missed, check the Twin Maiden Husks after further progression. If a Furlcalling Finger Remedy is active, cancel its effect before retrying Spirit Ashes, even if no co-op player has joined. (source、source)
Get the bell and your first ashes
- Explore until you meet Melina at a Site of Grace. Accept her accord to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle and unlock levelling.
- Return to Church of Elleh at night and speak to the witch who introduces herself as Renna. Follow the conversation; she gives you the Spirit Calling Bell and your first ashes.
- If you have progressed and missed her, continue until you have access to Roundtable Hold. Check the Twin Maiden Husks’ shop for the bell and the early ashes. The bell is not permanently lost because you missed the church encounter.
Use the ashes in a fight
Open Equipment and place a spirit ash in a quick item slot or pouch. Read the ash’s description for its resource requirement. Near an eligible encounter, look for the monument icon on the left side of the screen. Select and use the equipped ash while you have enough of the required resource; there is no need to equip the bell.
For a first boss attempt, summon after entering the arena when there is a safe opening. You can usually summon only once per battle, so protect that opening. Let the spirit draw some attention, but watch the boss: it can switch targets. Use the space to heal or make a short attack, then prepare to dodge.
The ash is greyed out: check these first
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| No monument icon | Move into a permitted summoning area; ashes do not work everywhere. |
| Resource is too low | Read the ash’s cost and restore the required resource before trying. Most ashes use FP; check the item for exceptions. |
| Another spirit is active | Only one type can be active at a time. Using the same ash again dismisses it. |
| Playing ordinary co-op multiplayer | Spirits cannot be summoned during that session. Return to normal solo play and check again. |
| Missed Renna | Check the Roundtable Hold merchant after gaining access. |
A spirit leaves when defeated, after the boss is defeated, or if it moves too far from the monument. If it disappears unexpectedly, check those conditions before changing your build.
