When you are unsure where to spend your early Runes, prioritise Vigor, then meet the requirements of the weapon you want to use. If repeated dodges leave you out of stamina or your equipment makes rolling sluggish, consider Endurance or lighten your load. More damage helps, but surviving another hit gives you more chances to learn an enemy’s moves.

This is an early-character guide for Elden Ring, not the separate game Nightreign. The right balance depends on your equipment and playstyle.
Diagnose the problem first
| What happens? | Check first | Possible investment |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary enemies defeat you in a couple of hits | Are you trading blows instead of avoiding attacks? | Vigor increases HP. |
| You can equip a weapon but see a requirement warning | Compare the weapon’s requirements with your attributes. | Meet its requirements before chasing other upgrades. |
| You run out of stamina after attacking or dodging | Are you spending the entire bar on attacks? | Save stamina for defence; consider Endurance if it still feels limiting. |
| Spells or skills quickly empty FP | Is your flask allocation helping, or are you spending FP unnecessarily? | Adjust your flasks and consider Mind for more FP. |
Choose your next level
- After meeting Melina and unlocking levelling, use the level-up option at a Site of Grace. Check the requirements of the weapon you intend to use and meet them if you are short.
- Once those requirements are met, prioritise Vigor if a few hits often end your attempt. The level-up screen shows the HP change; do not put every point into damage simply because the number looks tempting.
- If your roll feels heavy, check equipment load in the equipment screen. Remove something you do not need and compare the roll. If you still need the extra carrying capacity, consider Endurance.
- For melee, choose Strength or Dexterity according to your weapon’s requirements and scaling. For a spell-focused character, check spell requirements and use Mind when your actual FP needs justify it. You do not need to raise every damage attribute at once.
Inspect equipment details for requirements and scaling, and use the game’s explanation function for unfamiliar attributes. Runes also pay for weapon upgrades. If you stay alive comfortably but fights take a long time, check whether you can strengthen your weapon before spending every Rune on levels.
Check the equipment screen’s load category as well as its numbers. Above your maximum load you cannot roll or backstep; remove equipped weight until the category changes, then test the roll. (source)
Can you change direction later?
Your starting class determines initial stats and gear, not a permanent playstyle. You can switch to another weapon or spell once you meet its requirements. There is also a way to reallocate attributes later, after progressing and spending a specific item. For now, aim for a character that can explore reliably rather than worrying over every single point.
