Quick answer

Godrick rewards patience more than a long combo. Watch the end of his attack, take one or two hits when he recovers, and save stamina to dodge again. Around half health he grafts a dragon head onto his arm: the fight keeps its axe attacks but adds fire. This guide discusses that phase transition.

Before the fog

Rest and refill your flasks at the nearby Secluded Cell Site of Grace. If your weapon barely damages him, explore Limgrave for upgrade materials and strengthen it before returning. Bring a shield or armor that suits your load, but avoid becoming so heavily equipped that your dodge becomes awkward.

For optional help, speak with Nepheli Loux in Stormveil Castle before the encounter; after the relevant dialogue her golden summon sign can appear outside Godrick's fog. Spirit Ashes are another option if you have unlocked spirit summoning and see its availability indicator. Neither is required.

Phase one: wait for the finish

Godrick swings his axe in sequences and can roll into a follow-up. Don't assume the first swing is the last: stay outside its range or dodge through the attack, watch for the final motion, then answer with a short attack. Keep enough stamina for a second dodge rather than spending it all on hits.

When he drives his axe into the ground, expect successive shockwaves; back away or time your evasions instead of healing directly beside him. Heal once you have created space and he has committed to an attack, not while standing in the path of his next swing. Use the arena's open space so terrain does not trap your camera or movement.

Phase two: respect the fire

The cutscene signals the dragon-arm phase. At the start he breathes fire across the arena: if you are close enough, move or roll around toward his side rather than backing straight along the flames. Don't run through fire from far away merely to punish; wait for a safer opening.

The ground-slam sequence gains an additional shockwave in this phase, so keep watching rather than counterattacking after the earlier impacts. His dragon arm can add fire attacks alongside familiar axe moves. Take a short punish after a clearly completed attack and reset your spacing.

If you keep losing

Dying before the transition? Practice recognizing the final axe swing and upgrade your weapon. Reaching phase two with no healing left? Try a shorter punish and leave room to dodge. Getting caught by the fire? Start moving sideways sooner and prioritize escape over damage. A summon can create breathing room, but watch the boss: he may switch targets.
