Quick answer

Check the account, Save Data Cloud and manual Cloud Island backup, then understand transfer and overwrite risks.

Before changing consoles or making big shared changes, distinguish Save Data Cloud for the console game save from a manual Cloud Island backup. They aren't the same button. A nearby-console transfer is a move: Nintendo says the source save is deleted after transfer, and existing target save data can be overwritten.

This guide summarizes Nintendo's official instructions. Menu names and account or membership rules depend on region and device; we haven't performed the backup or transfer ourselves.

First: identify the account

On the source console, check the user you normally play Pokopia with and its linked Nintendo Account; the presence of a game card or download alone isn't enough. Check the same account on the new console. Nintendo's nearby transfer requires users on both consoles linked to the same Nintendo Account. Don't assume saves can be merged freely into another account.

Game save: check cloud status first

Nintendo's product listing includes Save Data Cloud for Pokopia. The service requires an eligible Nintendo Switch Online membership and other applicable conditions. On the source console, check the user's game backup status and timestamp. Confirm the backup succeeded before considering a download on the new device. If you lack membership or can't confirm the status, preserve the source data and consult Nintendo Support before initializing anything.

Cloud save doesn't mean every player's game or island automatically merges. The separate manual Cloud Island backup below is not a substitute for the console game-save backup.

Nearby transfer: moving isn't copying

Nintendo says both consoles must be near each other and online, with users linked to the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo Switch Online membership isn't required for this nearby transfer feature itself. On the source, find System Settings → Data Management → Transfer Your Save Data → Send Save Data to Another Console. On the target, choose Receive Save Data in the transfer menu. Follow the prompts to select the user and Pokopia save and confirm.

Read any overwrite prompt first. Nintendo says the source save is deleted when the transfer completes. If the target already has a save for the same game, choosing to overwrite deletes that existing data irreversibly. If there's progress worth keeping on the target, cancel first and verify backup and ownership before deciding. Afterward, start the game under the right user on the target and check progress before dealing with the old device.

Cloud Island: back it up separately

If you created a Cloud Island, use an in-game PC: Link Play → Check Settings → Cloud Island Settings, press R to reach Cloud Island Backup, select Save and follow the prompts. Nintendo says you can manually back up only an island you created and keep one backup at a time. A new backup prompts deletion of the existing one; decide whether to replace it before confirming.

To restore, choose Restore in the same menu, check the backup and follow the prompts. Restoration ends the current session for people on the island, and Nintendo limits it to once per day. It's an actual restore, not a harmless preview; check current shared progress with collaborators first.

Still missing progress?

Check the current user and Nintendo Account, that the game is on Switch 2, whether the correct save reached the target and the backup date. If transfer failed or the source is unavailable, note the error and contact Nintendo Support. Avoid deleting remaining data or repeatedly overwriting while the cause is unclear.
