Quick answer

Prepare soil, keep it hydrated and recognize each bean growth stage.

Start with a bean seed you already own and a small patch you can return to. The reliable loop is prepare soil → plant → keep the soil hydrated → wait for the ripe plant → harvest. A planted tile submerged in water will not grow, so more water is not always better.

Need your first seed? Published guides say Drilbur gives bean seeds when you meet it in Withered Wasteland; another route obtains seeds through a Hitmonchan request. One guide associates Rototiller with registering Drilbur; a more detailed walkthrough says to water its dry field with Water Gun and speak to Drilbur. Follow the on-screen request; the exact unlock trigger has not been independently tested. On the default controls described there, select the seed and press A on prepared soil; collect ripe produce with Y. Check your current button prompts if controls differ.

Drilbur / Water Gun

For the early Drilbur route, Bulbapedia describes using Rock Smash to pass the rock barrier near the Pokémon Center rubble, then clearing the rock blocking water above the path and returning to Drilbur to learn Rototiller. Another walkthrough describes watering its dry field. Check Drilbur’s current request and follow the route shown in your game; we have not verified the exact trigger ourselves.

What you need

  • A bean seed and accessible soil; if you have no seed yet, keep progressing and collecting rather than assuming every area sells it.
  • Access to Rototiller to prepare the soil. If the move is not available in your current progress, return after unlocking it through play.
  • Water beside the soil or an available sprinkler to keep the area hydrated. Exact interface names depend on game language.

Plant and care for one patch

  1. Choose a reachable patch that is not underwater and is away from lava. Use Rototiller on the soil, then select the bean seed and plant it in the prepared tile. Check that the seed appears in the intended spot.
  2. Provide hydration with water next to the soil or a sprinkler. Do not flood the plant: the cited mechanics guide says submerged plants do not grow, while nearby lava prevents hydration.
  3. Revisit the plant as the game day changes, which follows real-world time. The source describes one growth stage per day when hydrated; growth is not an instant result of repeatedly watering. Beans progress from seed → sprout → flowering plant → ripe plant.
  4. Once ripe, interact with the plant to harvest. If you need more than one crop, expand only after you can reliably keep the first tile hydrated.

If you have a Pokémon with the Grow specialty, the source says it can advance a plant one stage once per day, or regenerate one vegetable; the sparkle indicates that day's use. It is optional, not a prerequisite for the first patch.

Nothing is growing?

Check in order: was the seed planted in prepared soil, is the area hydrated, is the plant submerged or near lava, and has a day passed? Compare the plant's appearance with the four stages rather than harvesting as soon as a sprout appears. If a sprinkler is used, check whether the tile is within its coverage. These steps are based on published mechanics; timing and controls have not been independently tested in the current game.
