Quick answer

Troubleshoot locked professions, job-site ownership and empty trades in Java and Bedrock.

If a villager won't change profession, first check whether you've already traded with them. A completed trade locks their profession; breaking and replacing a workstation won't reroll that villager's job. Opening the trade screen alone is not a completed trade.

Check the villager

  1. Adult? Babies can't take a profession yet.
  2. Nitwit? Nitwits can't take a normal profession. Check the villager's behavior and trading interface rather than relying on a single clothing detail.
  3. Previously traded? If so, keep the profession and give them the matching workstation instead of trying to reset it.
  4. Who claimed the block? A nearby villager may own it. Reduce nearby spare job sites, handle one villager at a time, and watch for association particles.
  5. Can they work? Give the villager access to the claimed block and check during the normal daytime work period. Avoid repeatedly replacing blocks at night and concluding the mechanic is broken.

Java and Bedrock differ

In Java, an unemployed villager must approach an available job site to claim it. In Bedrock, workstation claiming can involve village and bed associations, and the closest villager is not necessarily the claimant. If a Bedrock setup fails, check the village's bed association as well as the workstation. A bed does not replace a workstation.

Try a farmer

Place an unclaimed composter near an eligible, untraded adult. Once the target becomes a farmer, open the trade screen and read the actual offers and prices. Complete a trade only when you're happy to keep that profession. More trades earn profession experience and can unlock later offers.

Trade out of stock?

In Java an exhausted trade shows a red X; in Bedrock the trade slot turns red. Green-coated nitwits cannot take a profession. Bedrock bed-linking guidance differs across community sources, so check the village and bed association if restocking fails rather than assuming that placing any bed guarantees a fix.

An unavailable offer usually has exhausted its stock. Give the villager access to their own workstation and time to work; don't destroy a valuable traded villager just to reset stock. Prices can vary with game mechanics, and offers may differ with edition, experiments or server settings. Check the current interface instead of assuming a particular enchanted book is guaranteed.
