Minecraft Stronghold Guide: Find the End Portal Without Running Out of Eyes

An Eye of Ender points toward a stronghold, not directly to its portal frame. Follow its direction in stages, search the stronghold, and save enough eyes for the twelve frame slots. Thrown eyes may break, so twelve total does not guarantee you'll have twelve when you arrive.

Pack for two jobs

Bring Eyes of Ender for locating and activating the frame. Some frame slots may already contain eyes, but don't assume yours will. Pack food, spare tools, light, building blocks and a way to record coordinates. You can locate the portal first and return later with fighting gear.

Make each Eye of Ender by combining one ender pearl and one blaze powder in a crafting grid. Equip the eye and use the item control to throw it: on a computer the default is right-click; on mobile use the configured touch control. Watch its flight, then pick it up if it does not break.

Follow the eye

1. Throw one in an open area and note its direction. Pick it up if it survives.
2. Travel in that direction, then throw again after some distance. Mark the route and avoid wasting eyes every few steps.
3. If the direction reverses, you may have passed the stronghold. Narrow the area and watch for the eye pointing down.
4. Dig a safe staircase rather than straight beneath your feet. Light caves and check for hazards.
5. Inside the stronghold, mark explored corridors and search for the portal room. A library does not guarantee the portal is immediately beside it.

Java and Bedrock generate strongholds differently. Do not assume another edition's coordinates for the same seed will match. Older worlds or unusual generation can complicate searches; check your edition and version before concluding a room is missing.

Activate and prepare

Clear hostile mobs and watch the lava. Use an eye on each empty frame; the portal activates when all twelve slots are filled. Stand safely at the edge for the final slots so you don't enter before you're ready.

Set your spawn using a bed in the Overworld, keep spare gear nearby and record coordinates. Beds explode when used in the End. Entry is a commitment: you normally leave through the return portal after defeating the dragon, or by dying. Prepare before stepping in.
