Plant a small wheat plot, replant the harvest and troubleshoot water, light and trampling.
Start with a 5 × 5 wheat plot: one water block in the center, farmland around it, and wheat seeds to plant. Replant seeds after each harvest for a repeatable supply. Wheat makes bread, but crops take time to grow, so bring other food while you wait.
Gather supplies
You'll need a hoe, a water bucket and wheat seeds. Breaking wild grass can drop seeds, though not every plant does. Use the hoe on dirt or grass blocks to make farmland. Pick a flat, well-lit place near your base; torches and a fence make it easier to light and protect.
Water, till and plant
Mark a square five blocks wide and five long. Dig the center block and place water there. Till the other 24 blocks. This is a top-down view:

F is farmland; W is water. Every plot is within the four-block irrigation distance described by Minecraft. Aim the bucket at the center hole so water doesn't wash crops away. Hydrated farmland darkens. Hold seeds and use them on each farmland block to plant; the use input depends on your device and settings.
You don't need 24 seeds immediately. Plant what you have and expand after harvesting. Put torches around the field for light and fence animals out, leaving a gate for yourself. Avoid jumping on farmland; if it becomes dirt again, till it with the hoe.
Harvest and replant
Wait until wheat is mature rather than breaking newly sprouted plants. Break mature wheat and collect the wheat and dropped seeds, then replant the farmland. Set aside enough seeds for the next crop before using the rest. Three wheat placed in a horizontal row in a crafting grid make bread.
If growth feels slow, check light and nearby water, then give the plants time; there is no promised fixed harvest time. Bone meal can speed growth, but isn't needed to wait for plants to grow naturally.
A mature wheat crop is full height and brown rather than the short green stages. Break the brown crop, collect the wheat and seeds, then replant; texture packs can change its appearance.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Check |
|---|---|
| Seeds won't plant | Is the block tilled farmland, and are you holding wheat seeds? |
| Farmland looks dry | Is water still in the center and the plot built as shown? |
| Farmland turned to dirt | Did you jump or did an animal trample it? Till again and protect the field. |
| Wheat isn't mature | Check light and water, wait longer, and don't break young plants early. |
