Quick answer

Prepare for the End, clear healing crystals and switch tactics when the dragon perches.

For a first Ender Dragon fight, prioritize staying alive and reaching solid ground. Destroy the End crystals healing the dragon, then attack from range while it flies and switch to melee when it perches. This conservative Java/Bedrock route doesn't rely on bed explosions or a one-cycle kill.

Before the portal

Bring durable armor, a melee weapon, a bow and enough arrows, food, a pickaxe, building blocks and a water bucket. Healing or slow-falling potions can help if available, but aren't mandatory. Set your spawn with a bed in the Overworld, leave spare gear nearby and record the portal coordinates. A bed used in the End explodes. A water bucket or potion does not guarantee survival from every fall.

Reach the main island

On arrival, stop and look around. If the spawn platform is isolated or underground, make a protected route to the main island. Mark the way back to the entry area and avoid walking toward the void while watching the sky. Avoid looking directly at Endermen; if one attacks, move somewhere controlled rather than fighting on an edge.

Three tasks during the fight

  1. Destroy crystals. Shoot exposed crystals from a distance. They explode, so don't stand next to them. For caged crystals, plan a safe approach and retreat before climbing; the dragon can knock you off a pillar.
  2. Watch your health and the dragon. Move out of dragon breath, heal or eat in a safe spot, and don't risk the void just for one more shot.
  3. Use the perch window. When the dragon perches near the central exit, approach carefully for melee, then back away when it leaves. The dragon is immune to arrows and thrown tridents while perched, so a landed arrow may not deal damage.

For a caged crystal, one option is to build a guarded route upward with blocks, mine an opening in the iron bars with a pickaxe, then retreat to a stable platform several blocks away and shoot through the opening. Wait for the dragon to move away before approaching; the explosion and knockback can still kill you, so this is not a guaranteed safe method.

After victory or defeat

After winning, check the central exit and secure your rewards before exploring further. If you die, take spare gear back and assess where items landed. Dropped-item timing depends on whether the area is running; a multiplayer world may keep running, so quitting is not a guaranteed preservation method. Items lost to the void are a different recovery problem.

Mechanics are based on the community Minecraft Wiki. Java and Bedrock behavior differs in places; this draft has not been playtested and doesn't promise a guaranteed win.
