Quick answer

Breed cows with wheat for a repeatable source of experience and troubleshoot common problems.

Need a little experience before you can build a mob farm? Bring two adult cows home and breed them with wheat. The XP is modest, but the setup is easy to check and repeat. This is a manual survival setup for Java and Bedrock, not a high-output farm.

What you need

  • At least two adult cows, wheat for both, and a supply of wheat for later rounds.
  • A fenced, well-lit pen with a gate near your base and enough room to see the animals.
  • A nearby wheat plot makes the process easier, but breeding—not harvesting wheat—is the XP source.

To feed each adult, hold wheat and use the interact control on that cow: normally right-click on a computer, or use the configured touch control on mobile. Feed the second adult separately; holding wheat nearby only leads cows and does not feed them.

Bring them in and breed

  1. Hold wheat to lead two adult cows into the pen. Close the gate and check for gaps.
  2. Use wheat on each cow. Watch for the hearts, then a calf.
  3. Move near the experience orbs to collect them. Keep at least two adults for another round.
  4. Return to your crops while the parents cool down. The community Wiki reports a five-minute breeding cooldown and about 20 minutes for a calf to grow; do not count on immediate repeat breeding.

No calf or no visible XP?

Check that both animals are adults and that each received wheat. If they just bred, wait before trying again. Watch whether a calf actually appears and whether you already absorbed the orbs. Damaged gear with Mending can use collected XP, so your level may rise less than expected.

Keep the pen manageable: overcrowding can cause problems, and servers may impose animal limits. Mining some ores and collecting smelted output also grant XP, but not every ore does. For large enchanting costs this small pen is slow; move to a version-appropriate advanced farm when needed.

Minecraft's official cow guide confirms wheat breeding and experience orbs; the community Wiki supplies cooldown details. This draft has not been playtested across versions.
