After the prologue, start at the Ravaged Beach and search around the Nautiloid wreck. You can recruit more companions than fit in the active party: the player character plus three companions travel together, while others can stay at camp.

Three nearby recruits
Shadowheart: if you freed her pod on the Nautiloid, she is unconscious near your landing spot. Wake her and talk. If you left her in the pod, look near the ancient door at Overgrown Ruins; the Emerald Grove is another possible meeting place.
Astarion: look for him on the trail west of the crashed ship. Approach and speak with him; the first meeting becomes tense, but you can continue the conversation and invite him.
Gale: find the unstable purple portal at the Roadside Cliffs waypoint east of the wreck. Interact and help the hand emerging from it; dialogue and checks determine whether you free him. If a check fails, pay attention to available follow-up options rather than assuming recruitment succeeded.
Gale’s portal is near X: 224, Y: 326. To recruit him, choose to help the hand and follow the available checks; class-specific choices may differ. Some Dark Urge choices prevent recruitment, so read the option before confirming.
If someone is missing
Companions can move or become unavailable after events and choices. Check the journal and nearby alternative locations; a missed encounter is not always permanent, but do not assume every companion will wait forever. Before leaving an area or choosing a hostile response, consider the consequences. To change the active group, speak with companions at camp.
