Quick answer

If a modded save stops loading after an update, protect a copy of the save first, then check the mod list. Removing a mod the save depends on can create a different problem, so don’t overwrite your only working save while testing.

If a modded save stops loading after an update, protect a copy of the save first, then check the mod list. Removing a mod the save depends on can create a different problem, so don’t overwrite your only working save while testing.

Start with the save and versions

  1. Make a separate backup of your save files before changing mods. On Windows, Larian places local game data under %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3; the launcher’s gear menu can open the profile folder. Copy the save data to another location rather than moving it.
  2. Note the game version, the mod names and versions, and which save last loaded successfully. In multiplayer, ask the host for their enabled list and versions too.
  3. Open the in-game Mod Manager and check for updates. A game patch can make a previously working mod incompatible; updating everything at once can also make it harder to identify the cause, so record changes.

On Windows, paste %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public\Savegames\Story into File Explorer. Each save is a folder: copy the desired save folder to another location before testing.

Read the verification window

When loading a modded save or joining a session, the verification window can offer Download, Enable, Update or Downgrade to match the save or host. “New Mods” identifies your enabled mods that the session does not use; “Third-Party” identifies mods unavailable in the in-game browser. Match the requested list and versions, not just the names. Some options depend on the specific mismatch and available files.

Find the conflict without risking the campaign

For a controlled test, disable supported mods in the in-game manager and try a separate unmodded save or a new game. If that works but your modded save does not, re-enable mods in small groups and compare the result. A mod-dependent save may not load correctly with its mods disabled; failure there alone does not prove the base game is broken.

If you use third-party mods, check their own removal instructions and dependencies. Larian’s PC guidance explains where to inspect mod files and the launcher’s data-mismatch log; back up anything you change and do not delete an unknown folder as a first step. Once you isolate a mod, report the game version and symptoms to its author. If the issue also happens without mods, contact Larian support with the reproduction steps.
