Early levels
At level 1, prioritize Strength and choose a fighting style that fits your weapon: Defence is a straightforward choice for extra protection. Use Second Wind when healing will keep you in the fight. At level 2, Action Surge grants an extra action; save it for a turn when it changes the outcome rather than using it automatically.
At level 3 choose Battle Master. Trip Attack can knock a suitable target prone, Menacing Attack may frighten, and Riposte uses a reaction when a nearby enemy misses a melee attack. These manoeuvres consume superiority dice, which return after a short or long rest. At level 4, consider raising Strength; at level 5, Extra Attack improves your regular attack action.
Equipment and alternatives
Wear armour you are proficient with and use a weapon that matches your chosen style. The Everburn Blade can be obtained from Commander Zhalk during the Nautiloid prologue, but attempting it adds risk; escaping is the priority. If you missed it, use a normal greatsword or another proficient weapon and upgrade when you find a suitable replacement. A shield and one-handed weapon trade some offense for protection.
Inspect enemy resistance and positioning, use a manoeuvre when allies can follow up, and rest before superiority dice run dry. Exact equipment depends on your route and loot.
