Your active party has room for the player character and three companions. Aim to cover damage, survival, control and exploration; one character can handle more than one job.

Two starting combinations
Weapon-focused player character + Shadowheart + Gale + Astarion: let your character hold the front, Shadowheart support and heal, Gale use spells for damage or control, and Astarion handle stealth and locks. Keep your fragile spellcaster out of easy reach.
Bard player character + Karlach + Shadowheart + Gale: Karlach takes the front, Shadowheart supports, Gale supplies spells, and the Bard can help with dialogue and support. If you want the Bard to open locks, select suitable Dexterity and Sleight of Hand proficiency when creating the character. This party trades a dedicated Rogue for a more conversational lead.
Share resources deliberately
Before a fight, decide who starts the conversation and who protects the back line. Bring thieves’ tools for locks and healing potions for emergencies. Spells and other limited abilities do not all recover the same way: inspect their descriptions and rest when your party needs it. Outside combat, use the character with the relevant skill rather than assuming the leader is best at every check.
These are starting examples, not mandatory compositions. Recruit availability and story choices vary. Withers can later respec companions, so adjust the party around the characters you enjoy.
